Strength training, without the gym.
Muscle is the organ of aging well. Here is how to build it with a floor, a wall and patience.
Start Full-Body Basics with the timer
Why strength beats everything else
From your thirties on, you lose muscle every year you do not push against something. That loss, not age itself, is most of why stairs get harder, jars get tighter and falls get likelier. Two strength sessions a week reverse the slide at any age; studies find muscle growth in people in their nineties. No other habit buys back function the way this one does.
The only movements you need
Every strength program on earth is built from six patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry and core. At home that looks like squats to a chair, glute bridges, push-ups against a wall or floor, band rows, carrying the groceries in one trip, and planks. Master those with your own body weight and you have covered what most gym machines cover.
How to actually progress
Muscle grows when the last two or three repetitions feel like work. When twelve repetitions feel easy, do not add endless reps: make it harder. Slow the lowering, pause at the bottom, move from wall to counter to floor push-ups, or add a resistance band. That single idea, called progressive overload, is the entire secret the fitness industry resells every January.
A week that works
Two or three sessions of twenty minutes, with a rest day between them. Our Full-Body Basics plan walks you through one with a timer and form cues, and Gentle Start does the same for beginners and anyone over 65. Soreness after a new plan is normal for a few days; sharp joint pain is not, so swap the easier version whenever a move pinches.
What about protein
Strength work and protein are a pair: aim for roughly 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight a day, a little more past 60. Food covers it for most people. The full protein guide in the library runs the numbers for your weight.
The cheapest strength equipment that works
A set of bands covers every exercise a beginner strength plan asks for, at any level, in any room, for the price of one gym visit.
