How can I fall asleep faster?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

The single strongest lever is a fixed wake time seven days a week; it anchors the whole clock and builds evening sleep pressure honestly. Morning daylight and daytime movement deepen it.

Evenings: dim lights an hour out, screens out of bed, caffeine done eight hours prior, and the bed reserved for sleep so the brain relearns the association. If sleep does not come in twenty minutes, leave the bed and return drowsy; lying there fighting trains wakefulness.

Expect the reset to take two to three weeks of consistency. Struggles beyond a month deserve CBT-I, which fixes most chronic insomnia without pills.

For light sleepers

Foam earplugs or a steady white noise machine fix more nights than most sleep aids, and cost almost nothing. Worth trying before anything stronger.
