Heart & blood pressure

Readings, palpitations, cholesterol and what actually lowers the numbers.

What is a dangerously high blood pressure?

A reading of 180/120 or higher is the level doctors treat as a possible emergency, especially with chest pain, a severe headache, trouble breathing, vision changes or weakness. That combination needs urgent care now, not a repeat reading tomorrow.

Why is my blood pressure higher in the morning?

Blood pressure naturally rises in the early morning as the body wakes: stress hormones climb before you even open your eyes. A modest morning bump is normal biology.

Can drinking water lower blood pressure?

Not meaningfully. Staying hydrated keeps blood pressure stable, but extra water does not treat high blood pressure, and dehydration can actually make some readings swing higher or lower.

Is 140 over 90 high blood pressure?

Yes. 140/90 is the level most guidelines call stage 2 hypertension in the US system, or grade 1 in the European one. One reading does not make the diagnosis, but it does start the conversation.

Why do I feel heart palpitations at night?

Lying quietly at night removes distraction, so you notice beats you would never feel by day. Caffeine, alcohol, stress, poor sleep and lying on the left side all make skipped or forceful beats more noticeable.

What is a normal resting heart rate?

For most adults, 60 to 100 beats per minute at rest is the normal range. Fit people often sit in the 50s, and very trained athletes lower still.

Does anxiety raise blood pressure?

Yes, temporarily. Adrenaline tightens blood vessels and speeds the heart, so readings during anxious moments can jump 10 to 30 points. That includes the clinic itself, which is why white coat readings run high.

My blood pressure is 150/100. What should I do?

First, do not panic: 150/100 is high, not an emergency, unless you also have chest pain, severe headache, breathlessness or vision changes.

Can I stop my blood pressure medicine once readings are normal?

Not on your own. Readings are usually normal because the medicine is working, and stopping often sends pressure back up within days to weeks, sometimes with a rebound.

Why is only my bottom blood pressure number high?

The bottom number, diastolic, is the pressure between beats. Isolated high diastolic readings are more common in younger adults and often track with stress, alcohol, salt and weight.

Is chest pain always a heart attack?

No. Muscles, ribs, reflux, anxiety and lung problems all cause chest pain far more often than the heart does. But heart pain is the one that cannot wait.

What is a good blood pressure for my age?

Below 120/80 is considered optimal for adults of every age. Pressure tends to creep up as arteries stiffen with the years, but higher numbers are worth treating, not just accepting as aging.

Can lack of sleep cause high blood pressure?

Yes. Blood pressure normally dips at night, and short or broken sleep steals that recovery window. Regularly sleeping under six hours is linked with higher daytime pressure.

Why does my heart race when I stand up?

Standing drops blood toward the legs, and the heart briefly speeds up to compensate. A small rise is normal; feeling it strongly can reflect dehydration, heat, deconditioning, some medicines or anemia.

Does coffee raise blood pressure?

Temporarily, yes: caffeine can lift readings 5 to 10 points for a few hours, more in people who rarely drink it. Regular drinkers develop tolerance and see less effect.

What does my cholesterol ratio mean?

The common ratio divides total cholesterol by HDL, the protective kind. Below about 4.5 is reassuring; lower is better. It packs two numbers into one signal of risk.

Is an LDL of 160 dangerous?

An LDL of 160 mg/dL is firmly in the high range, and most guidelines call 190 and above very high. What it means for you depends on the company it keeps: blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history and age.

Can stress cause a heart attack?

Severe sudden stress can occasionally trigger one in a heart already primed by narrowed arteries, and extreme grief can cause a temporary condition that mimics one.

Why are my feet and ankles swollen?

Long days standing or sitting, heat, salt and some medicines, including certain blood pressure pills, are the everyday causes of puffy ankles by evening.

What heart rate is too high during exercise?

A rough ceiling is 220 minus your age. Working at 50 to 85 percent of that covers most goals, and being able to talk in short sentences is the practical test of moderate effort.

Can you feel high blood pressure?

Usually not. High blood pressure is called the silent killer precisely because most people feel nothing for years while it quietly works on the arteries, heart and kidneys.

Is it safe to exercise with high blood pressure?

For most people, not only safe but one of the treatments: regular activity lowers resting pressure by 5 to 8 points over weeks, comparable to a starting dose of medicine.

What causes low blood pressure and is it serious?

Many healthy people simply run low, especially the young, the fit and the slim, and low numbers without symptoms are usually nothing to fix.

Why do I get short of breath climbing stairs?

Stairs demand a sudden jump in effort, so even reasonably healthy people breathe hard at the top. Deconditioning is the most common explanation, and it improves with steady walking.

Does alcohol affect blood pressure?

Yes, in both directions. A drink can lower pressure for a few hours, then it rebounds higher overnight and the next day. Regular drinking above moderate levels raises average pressure steadily.
