How common are statin side effects really?
Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS
Blinded trials tell the honest story: muscle symptoms occur at nearly the same rate on statins as on placebo, a far cry from internet lore. True statin muscle damage is rare, and serious liver problems rarer.
That said, individual experiences are real: if aches begin, the move is a check, a pause-and-rechallenge, a dose change or a different statin, options exist rather than a binary of suffer-or-stop.
What is not in dispute: in people at real cardiovascular risk, statins prevent heart attacks and strokes as well as almost anything in medicine. Quitting silently over feared side effects hands back that protection; renegotiate with the prescriber instead.
