What causes a white coated tongue?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

Most white coating is harmless debris and bacteria, thicker after dry mouth, mouth breathing, dehydration, smoking or soft diets. Gentle tongue brushing and hydration clear it in days.

Patches that wipe off leaving redness suggest thrush, more likely after antibiotics, with inhaled steroids, diabetes or dentures, and it treats easily once confirmed.

A white patch that cannot be wiped off and persists beyond two weeks, especially in smokers or drinkers, needs a dentist or doctor to look. That one is not a hygiene issue.
