When is a fever dangerous in an adult?

Fever itself is a tool, not the enemy; most adult fevers ride out safely at home with fluids and rest. The number matters less than the company it keeps.
Seek care urgently for fever with a stiff neck, severe headache and light sensitivity, a spreading rash, confusion, breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe dehydration, or in anyone on chemotherapy or immune-suppressing drugs, where fever is always urgent.
Otherwise: above 39.4 C or 103 F persisting despite medicine, any fever beyond three days, or one that returns after a clear gap deserves same-week review. Recent tropical travel adds malaria to the list and speeds everything up.
If you are buying a thermometer
A basic digital stick thermometer is accurate and costs a few dollars. Forehead scanners are fine for quick checks on children; ear thermometers need good technique to read true.
