Can a dermatologist really assess skin from a photo?
Good photos allow a useful first opinion on many rashes, spots and moles: what the area most likely is, how urgent it looks, and whether it needs an in-person exam or a biopsy. What a photo cannot do is give a certain diagnosis, so our reply always says plainly when seeing a doctor in person matters and how soon.
How do I take useful photos of a skin problem?
Use daylight near a window, hold the camera about 15 centimeters away, and make sure the area is in sharp focus before you shoot. Add one wider shot so the doctor can see the location on the body, and one very close shot of the edge or surface. No filters, no flash directly on the skin if it washes out the color.
When should I skip the photo review and see a doctor now?
Go in person without waiting if the area is spreading in hours, blistering, severely painful, or you feel unwell with fever. The same goes for a dark spot or mole that is bleeding or growing fast. A photo review is for questions, not emergencies, and we say so before you pay anything.
What happens after I send my photos?
You get an invoice for $49 by email. Once it is paid, a dermatologist reviews your photos and notes, and you receive a written reply within 2 working days: what the area looks like, what to watch for, and exactly what to say if you take it to a doctor in person. If we cannot help, the invoice is canceled and anything paid is refunded.
