Can stress cause skin problems?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

Reliably. Stress hormones inflame skin, slow healing and disturb the barrier, which is why acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and hives all flare in hard seasons, and why itch worsens exactly when sleep is worst.

Stress also drives unconscious scratching and picking that keeps lesions alive.

Treating skin while ignoring a stress storm is mopping with the tap open: sleep, movement, breathing practice and support are dermatologic treatments in disguise. When picking itself has become the habit that maintains the damage, saying so honestly to a doctor opens genuinely effective help.
