Can stress really cause stomach problems?
Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS
Completely. The gut has its own nervous system wired directly to the brain, which is why exams cause butterflies and dread causes nausea. Chronic stress changes gut movement, sensitivity and even the microbiome.
Irritable bowel, functional dyspepsia and stress flares of reflux are real physical conditions with a nervous-system trigger, not imagination.
Treating the stress arm, sleep, breathing practice, therapy where needed, improves gut symptoms as measurably as diet changes in many people. Doing both works best.
