Why do I get diarrhea right after eating?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

Eating triggers the gastrocolic reflex, a signal telling the colon to make room. In sensitive guts, irritable bowel especially, that signal fires too hard, sending you to the bathroom minutes after meals. The food leaving is not the food you just ate.

Common aggravators: large fatty meals, caffeine, stress, and sometimes lactose or fructose.

Track which meals trigger it. Urgency with blood, night-time diarrhea, fever or weight loss moves this from irritable bowel territory to something needing tests.

For vomiting or diarrhea

Rehydration salts replace fluid better than water or sports drinks. Keep a few sachets at home; nobody wants to shop for them while sick.
