Does alcohol help you sleep?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

It helps you fall asleep and then charges interest: as alcohol wears off mid-night it fragments sleep, suppresses REM, worsens snoring and apnea, and adds bathroom trips. The second half of the night pays for the first.

Regular nightcaps also build tolerance, needing more for the same sedation while sleep quality keeps falling.

The honest experiment: two alcohol-free weeks while noting morning freshness. Most nightly drinkers are startled by the difference, and evening alcohol is one of the most common hidden causes of unrefreshing sleep.
