What calms an eczema flare?

Answered by the AskDoc Medical Team · Medically reviewed under our Medical Director, MBBS

Flood the skin with moisturizer, thick fragrance-free cream or ointment, several times daily and within three minutes of bathing; this alone halves flares. Short cool showers, fragrance-free wash, and cotton against skin remove the common aggravators.

For the angry patches, a steroid cream of appropriate strength used properly for a defined stretch is safe and effective; fear of them, steroid phobia, prolongs misery.

Weeping, crusted, or golden-scabbed patches suggest infection needing a doctor. Flares that keep returning in the same spots earn a proper plan, and newer non-steroid options exist for tricky areas.

For dry or itchy skin

Doctors reach for plain, fragrance-free creams like CeraVe or Cetaphil, not fancy actives. A thicker cream beats lotion, applied within minutes of washing while skin is still damp.
