The best brain drug is a pair of shoes.

Memory and speed are trainable, and almost nothing sold for the brain does what movement does.

Staying active together, the best-evidenced brain habit

Exercise is the headline

Regular aerobic exercise grows the memory centers of the brain measurably, improves processing speed at every age, and is the single most consistent finding in dementia prevention research. Brisk walking counts in full. If brain health is the goal, the fitness plans on this site are the brain plan.

Sleep is when memory is written

Deep sleep is when the day is filed into long-term memory and the brain runs its cleanup cycles. Chronic short sleep shows up as foggy recall and slow reactions first, and as higher dementia risk over decades. Seven to nine hours beats every supplement ever tested.

The quiet protectors

Treating high blood pressure protects the brain as much as the heart. Correcting hearing loss matters more than almost anyone expects; straining to hear taxes the brain and hearing aid users show measurably slower decline. Learning real new things, an instrument, a language, a craft, builds reserve in a way puzzle apps do not. And people: social connection is protective in study after study.

What to skip

Brain supplements keep failing their trials, and brain-training apps mostly train the app. Measure yourself instead: our free reaction time test gives you a number you can actually watch, and the habits above are what move it.

Before you buy anything for sleep

No gadget fixes sleep apnea. But if your score above suggests a sleep study, a simple pulse oximeter can give your doctor useful overnight numbers for under $30.

Common questions

What is the best exercise for the brain?
The one you will do most days. Aerobic exercise has the strongest evidence for memory and processing speed, strength work adds benefits of its own, and anything with coordination, like dance, works both body and brain at once.
Do puzzles and crosswords prevent dementia?
They keep you good at puzzles and are a pleasant habit, but the transfer to general memory is small in trials. Learning genuinely new skills, staying physically active and staying social carry more evidence.
When is forgetfulness worth seeing a doctor?
Losing keys is normal at every age. Forgetting what keys are for, getting lost on familiar routes, repeating the same question in one conversation, or friends noticing a change: those patterns deserve a proper assessment, and early is far better than late.
