The strip math nobody shows you

Meters from major brands are all accurate enough for home use; regulators require it. The difference is the strips: a meter sold cheap can lock you into strips costing twice as much per test. Multiply strip price by how often you will test before you look at the meter price at all.

What actually matters in the meter

A screen you can read, a strip you can handle, and a small blood drop requirement. If your hands or eyes are not what they were, those three features matter more than any app. Memory that stores readings with dates is worth having; everything else is decoration.

Test at the times that teach you something

Which glucose meter is the most accurate?
All meters from major brands must meet the same accuracy standard, within about 15 percent of a lab value. Consistency of technique, clean hands and a big enough blood drop affect your numbers more than the brand does.
Why are test strips so expensive?
Strips are where manufacturers make their money, like razors and blades. Compare the per-strip price across brands before choosing a meter, and ask your insurer which strips they cover.
Do I need a CGM instead?
Continuous monitors are excellent for people on insulin and increasingly popular otherwise, but they cost far more. For prediabetes and diet-controlled diabetes, a meter used at smart times answers most of the same questions.
