Women's health

Periods, hormones, screening and the questions too many women sit on for years.

Why is my period late if I am not pregnant?

Cycles respond to life. Stress, sudden weight change, intense exercise, travel across time zones, illness, and poor sleep can each delay ovulation, which delays everything after it.

What are the signs of PCOS?

The classic trio: irregular or missing periods, signs of excess androgens such as stubborn acne, facial hair growth or scalp thinning, and polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound. Two of the three make the diagnosis once other causes are excluded.

How heavy is too heavy for a period?

Soaking a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, clots larger than a coin, bleeding beyond seven days, or flooding through protection at night all count as heavy, whatever anyone in the family normalized.

What actually helps severe period cramps?

Anti-inflammatory painkillers work best started at the first hint of bleeding rather than at peak pain, because they block the prostaglandins driving the cramping. Heat on the lower belly genuinely rivals medication in trials, and gentle movement beats the fetal position.

Can I get pregnant from sex during my period?

Unlikely but genuinely possible. Sperm survive up to five days, so sex late in a period can meet an early ovulation, especially in shorter or irregular cycles.

What does white discharge mean?

Some white or clear discharge is the vagina's normal self-cleaning, changing texture across the cycle: stretchy near ovulation, thicker before periods. Odorless and itch-free means physiologic.

Why do I keep getting urinary tract infections?

Anatomy deals women a short urethra, and some people are simply more prone. Common contributors: holding urine long, low fluid intake, sex without urinating afterward, spermicides, and after menopause, thinning tissues from low estrogen.

At what age does menopause usually start?

The average final period arrives around 51, with normal spanning 45 to 55. The transition, perimenopause, begins years earlier, often mid-40s, with cycles shortening or scattering, sleep fraying, and heat surges arriving before periods stop.

Are hot flashes treatable or do I just endure them?

Treatable. Hormone therapy remains the most effective option and, for most healthy women within ten years of menopause, benefits outweigh risks; the blanket fear from two decades ago has been heavily revised.

Why am I spotting between periods?

Common and usually benign causes: ovulation spotting mid-cycle, the first months of new hormonal contraception, missed pills, and the hormonal wobble of perimenopause.

Which vitamins matter when trying to conceive?

One is non-negotiable: folic acid, 400 micrograms daily, started at least a month before trying, cuts serious spinal birth defects dramatically. It is the single best-evidenced supplement in all of medicine for this moment.

Why do I feel anxious and low before my period?

The late-cycle hormone drop shifts brain chemistry, and for many women mood dips, irritability and anxiety arrive on schedule each month. That is PMS, and it is physiology, not weakness.

Does birth control cause weight gain?

For the pill, patch and ring, large reviews find no consistent weight gain beyond what time alone brings; some retain a little fluid at first. The injection is the exception, linked to real gain in a subset of users.

What counts as a normal menstrual cycle length?

Textbooks say 28 days; bodies say 21 to 35, counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. A few days of variation between cycles is ordinary.

Why do my breasts hurt before my period?

Cyclical breast pain, tender, heavy, both sides, worst in the week before bleeding, is a hormone effect on breast tissue and affects most women at some point. It fades as the period arrives.

How much hair shedding is normal for a woman?

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal turnover; alarm arrives with visibly thinning parts, shrinking ponytails or handfuls in the shower.

Is more discharge during pregnancy normal?

Yes, increased thin, milky, mild-smelling discharge is expected as estrogen and blood flow rise; many women notice it from the first trimester onward.

Can I exercise during pregnancy?

For most pregnancies, exercise is recommended, not just permitted: about 150 minutes a week of moderate activity lowers gestational diabetes risk, helps mood and sleep, and eases delivery recovery. Walking, swimming and prenatal strength work are ideal.

What is endometriosis and how would I know I have it?

Tissue similar to the womb lining grows where it should not, inflaming and scarring with each cycle. The signature is pain: periods that derail life, deep pain with sex, painful bowel movements during periods, and sometimes fertility struggles.

Why am I exhausted during my period?

The hormone trough plus disturbed sleep plus cramping pain is tiring by itself, and that fatigue lifts within days.

Is vaginal itching always a yeast infection?

No, and treating everything as yeast is why so many itches never resolve. Bacterial vaginosis, skin conditions like eczema or lichen sclerosus, irritation from soaps and pads, low estrogen after menopause, and some infections all itch too.

What actually happens at a cervical screening?

A five minute appointment: a speculum opens the vaginal walls, a small soft brush sweeps cells from the cervix, and the sample is tested for HPV and cell changes. Uncomfortable pressure is common; sharp pain is not the goal, and you can ask to pause anytime.

Can stress really delay a period?

Directly. The brain runs the cycle, and under sustained stress the hypothalamus dials down the signals that trigger ovulation. No ovulation, no period on schedule.

What is a normal age for a first period?

Anywhere from 10 to 15 is within normal, typically about two years after breast development begins. The first years of cycles are often irregular while the hormonal axis matures, which is expected rather than worrying.

Do irregular periods mean I am infertile?

No. Irregular means ovulation is unpredictable, not absent. Many women with scattered cycles conceive without help; it may simply take longer because the fertile window is harder to find.
