A five minute appointment: a speculum opens the vaginal walls, a small soft brush sweeps cells from the cervix, and the sample is tested for HPV and cell changes. Uncomfortable pressure is common; sharp pain is not the goal, and you can ask to pause anytime.

It screens healthy people to catch changes years before any cancer could form, which is why it works so well.

An abnormal result almost never means cancer; it means closer watching or minor treatment. Skipping screening because of embarrassment or a previous rough experience is worth solving with the clinic, smaller speculums and self-swab options increasingly exist.
