Why Is My Vision Blurry?
A doctor explains blurry vision in plain words: the everyday causes from dry eyes to screens, what glasses can and cannot fix, and the patterns that need care today.

The short version
- Blur that builds slowly in both eyes is usually refractive: you need glasses, or new ones. Blur that fluctuates through the day is very often dry eyes or screen strain.
- Blood sugar swings blur vision by changing the lens shape, which is why new blur is a reason to check for diabetes, and why vision often steadies once sugar does.
- Sudden blur in one eye, blur with pain, flashes, a curtain across vision, or blur with weakness or slurred speech is an emergency, not a wait-and-see.
See a doctor promptly if
These are the signs that change this from something to read about into something to act on.
- Sudden vision loss or blur in one eye, a shadow or curtain across vision, or a burst of new floaters and flashes: emergency eye care the same day
- Blurry vision with sudden weakness, face droop, trouble speaking or severe headache: call your local emergency number
- Blur with deep eye pain, redness and nausea, or halos around lights at night: same-day care to rule out acute glaucoma
Blur is the eye's most common complaint and its least specific one: the same soft focus can mean you need reading glasses, that your eyes are dry, that your blood sugar is high, or, rarely, that something needs care within the hour. The pattern tells them apart better than the blur itself.
Slow and both eyes: focus#
Blur that crept in over months, affects both eyes, and improves when you squint is almost always refractive: the eye's optics need correction. In the forties it arrives as arms growing too short for menus, which is presbyopia, the universal stiffening of the lens. This kind is completely fixable with glasses or contacts, and an eye exam settles it.
Fluctuating through the day: the tear film and the screen#
The surface your vision actually focuses through is a liquid: the tear film. When it dries, from screens that suppress blinking, dry air, contact lenses, or simply years, vision softens and sharpens blink by blink. Late-day blur after hours of close work adds a tired focusing muscle on top. Artificial tears, the 20-20-20 habit from our screen strain guide, and blinking like you mean it fix most of this.
New blur with no obvious reason: check the sugar#
High blood glucose swells the lens and changes its focus, so unexplained new blur is one of the classic silent flags for diabetes, and vision can keep swinging until sugar steadies. It is also why the week of a sugar spike is the wrong week to buy glasses. New blur plus thirst, night-time urination, or any diabetes risk deserves a blood test first; our guide to early signs of type 2 diabetes covers the rest of the quiet signs.
What to actually do#
Gradual blur: book an eye exam, and mention every medicine you take, since antihistamines and antidepressants dry eyes. Fluctuating blur: tears, breaks, and the exam anyway. New unexplained blur: blood sugar check alongside the eye exam. And any of the warning patterns above: care today. If you are unsure which pattern is yours, ask a doctor and describe the timeline; with blur, the timeline is the diagnosis.
